KELLY WILLIS & BRUCE ROBISON DECLARE 2014 ‘OUR YEAR’

If Austin’s happily egalitarian music scene suddenly switched to a monarchy, Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison might have to learn to perform while balancing hefty crowns. The two already reign as one of Americana music’s coolest couples, and their latest release, Our Year, out May 27, 2014 on Premium/Thirty Tigers Records, elevates them closer to the lofty territory once occupied by beloved royals Johnny ’n’ June and George ’n’ Tammy.

Not that they would ever seek royal treatment, of course. This duo is way too down-to-earth for Downton Abbey airs. They’re Texans, after all. Robison is a Bandera boy; Oklahoma-born Willis an Army brat, got here as soon as she could. They fell in love while harmonizing together, though it took them until 2013 to release their first officially billed joint effort (not counting four children): Cheater’s Game.

GHOST TWINS POST “BREAKING FRIENDS”

Derby two-piece Ghost Twins are set to release their debut album Never Fear Total Failure this April. Fresh and forward-thinking with an independent sound, the record represents a new attitude for Ghost Twins, infusing experimental and leftfield ideas with huge melodic pop moments of sheer brilliance.

Never Fear Total Failure represents personal struggle and the eventual hope we can eventually achieve through our darkest hours. Lead track “2006” sees Ghost Twins’ experimentations with synthesisers and vocal manipulation continue, expressing the endeavours of humanity through times of torment and framing the album perfectly. One-half of Ghost Twins, Chris Jones, explains that the aim of “2006” was to create a song that ‘has a relentless, disorientating sound that mirrors the confusion of a troubled soul’. Previous single “Unknown Animal” is also featured on the album, a flawless bridge for listeners to experience Ghost Twins’ ever-increasing leftfield sound.

WIRE: NEW LP STREAM BY OBN III VIA NOISEY

OBN III’s third LP — the appropriately titled “Third Time to Harm” — follows the bands’ justly lauded LPs, “The One and Only” (2011), and self-titled follow-up (2012). This latest and greatest slab of guitar-driven magma from Austin’s great sons captures best the brute energy of their unique calling card; their live show (an experience that oscillates between epic and epileptic) by coupling it with heavy recordings. Third Time to Harm nets that exact rare bird that eludes so many; a truly charismatic front man fronting a real rock band that’s not faking a single thing and has talent. And situated amongst a modern class of garage rock superheroes cropping up everywhere, what’s so refreshing is that the OBN III’s’ unforced style and swagger not only shines through, but naturally punches through, song by song, show by show, laying the tracks for its own freight train.

LED BY THE LOST EPK FOR 2014

Led by the Lost formed after Adam and Chris played and wrote music together in several bands over 7 years. Greg relocated to Manchester from Reading for University and the lads met up at Beehive mill for a jam after finding each other online. They showed each other how they liked to play music and by the time a heavy jam session was over, Led by the Lost was born. With influences from Queens of the Stone Age, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Clutch and Seasick Steve, they set out to create a nostalgic 70’s bluesy rock groove.

They played their first show at the Witchwood 3 months later and have been on the road ever since playing notable venues such as The Ruby Lounge, Thirsty Scholar, Bakers Vaults, Night & Day. They have also supported Blackballed, Sound of Guns, The Tapestry and last year played their first festival MIND Stockport.

NEW MUSIC FROM JAKE LONDON APRIL 1

Runaway Heart, the latest release from newcomer, Jake London, is a perfect example of country music finding roots in “non-country” places.

Raised in a small town outside of Portland, Oregon, London found himself in Los Angeles with a borrowed Fender guitar that was seeing no use.   Within months of his California transplant, Jake got the devastating news that his 30 year-old brother had died of a heart attack.   Turning to the ocean for solace, London took to surfing. Those long hours in the water helped develop Jake’s strong “Live for Today” mantra that initially brought him the need to do and try everything.

KINKY LOVE POST “AFFAIR”

Hot and heavy are two of the first words that come to mind when describing Kinky Love’s debut EP Promise–and that’s exactly how this Chicago synth pop duo likes it. While a rare Nancy Sinatra song first inspired the band’s name, it soon became synonymous with more than the quick gratification their music provides. “It represents our overt and unnatural writing style,” says singer Xoe Wise of the “collaborative poetry” she creates with keyboardist Dan Zima. The two met through mutual friends in 2013 and set out to bring their distinct backgrounds to the five songs on Promise, which will be self released in April.

WIRE: ALEX METRIC TO RELEASE HOPE EP

Always at the vanguard of contemporary electronic innovation, UK’s Alex Metric is geared to release a new package of three meticulously produced future-house tracks as his Hope EP, coming via OWSLA / Big Beat on April 22nd. Building off of his previous releases, including his groundbreaking three-part Ammunition EP series, the London-based beatsmith has set himself apart with his keen ability to reinterpret and pay homage to the great genres of UK dance past while grasping today’s bass trends and intertwining both to push the envelope. The EP’s opener and title track is an instantly hypnotizing take on electro house that originally was reserved for DJ sets, but after a groundswell of attention Alex determined that it “seemed too good to not properly unleash on the world.” The next cut, “Spiritism”, is an exercise in minimalism with a focus on the analog, while the EP’s closer “Galaxy” is a retrofuturist disco epic perfect for getting bodies in motion. Both “Hope” and “Galaxy” feature the unequaled writing and production chops from uber talented duo Oliver. Undoubtedly Alex Metric will parlay his unparalleled vision and technical ability displayed on the Hope EP into continued prominence going into 2014.

WALTER TROUT FIGHTS FOR HIS LIFE AWAITING LIVER TRANSPLANT

Provogue / Mascot Label Group will release Walter Trout’s THE BLUES CAME CALLIN’ on June 10 in North America, as Walter Trout looks back at an almost 50-year commitment to playing and singing the blues.   The album was recorded throughout 2013.   The songs reflect Walter’s thoughts about mortality and his renewed appreciation for being alive.   An EPK can be screened here (with an embedded link provided below): http://youtu.be/btiS6ijncMk

As he became physically weaker, he fought to continue touring, and found that playing for people was powerful medicine.   Like the title of the new studio album, the Blues definitely came callin’ for Walter.   It kept him fighting, and in the process, it made him more determined than ever.   Walter is currently awaiting a liver transplant at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.   A fund raising initiative began last week to support Walter and his family which can be viewed here: http://www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/walter-trout-needs-a-new-liver-you-can-help-/151911

Trout offers, “To play my music for people has become even more important to me.   When I think about looking out into the crowds of people and connecting with everyone on a soul level, and sharing the experience of music with them, this is what keeps me fighting to get back: My family and my music is my lifeline.   These days, it means more to me than ever before.”

NEW SONG POSTED BY BUFFALO KILLERS

The new album from Cincinnati rock ‘n’ roll group Buffalo Killers is called Heavy Reverie and will be released on May 13th. Today, the band is giving fans an early sneak peak with the first single “Poisonberry Tide.”

“Poisonberry Tide busts out sounding like a hard rock R.E.M,” says music critic Tony Conely. “Peter Buck always wanted to make a real hard rock record with Dayton’s own Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices), and I gotta think it may have sounded much like this. Killer riffing and a lovely melody that floats over the top like a dream   The Gabbard brothers’ trademark harmonies come in on the pop radio ready choruses, and it’s time to take the top down and accelerate. I don’t know what’s on the radio these days, but this sure as hell should be.”

Having studied classical voice, guitar and violin   performing in orchestras in earlier years, he now spends his time between Melbourne and London recording an album of bass driven electronic beats overlaid with orchestral layers of synthesisers, strings, guitars on a bed of vocal samples. Influences on his music range from Sigur Ros to Passion Pit and Clams Casino.

“Inverbatim” features a processed vocal sample and 808 beat paired with restrained guitars, heavy sub bass and interlacing layers of stacked vocal melodies in a 5:22 tripartite cycle. The short film accompanying re-imagines the 1979 anti-drug video “Drugs Are Like That” and the 1992 bus safety video “Ghost Rider”   as a commentary on desire and loss in flux.

The material for the album was written both in Matisyahu’s Los Angeles home and while on tour.   Matisyahu states, “This record and period of my life deal with madness, listening for and following the inner intuitive voice, a small still sound.   This record deals with love, with feelings of brokenness and humility, with humanity, struggle, and sacrifice.”
