My First ZUNE – My Last CD!
Posted On 02/19/2008 11:29:16

This weekend was a special one. Besides being a 3-day weekend, I was given a brand new ZUNE from my wife. My birthday is coming up in March and my woman was so generous to let me get the ZUNE early enough to fill it with music for our cruise in April.

It is funny because the same woman who bought me my first Ipod was now buying me a ZUNE. I know that you are asking why would she do that? Well to be honest when I got the Ipod I did not have the best of computers. It was a dinosaur that I used to create Skope Magazine so it had seen better days. I was able to download whatever music I already had onto my Ipod but that was it. So I was stuck with 270 songs. When you work out 4 times a week like my wife & I do, those songs get played out quick.

Last year I ditched the PC and gave it to one of the movers that moved us from Boston to Melrose, MA. I then treated myself to a new Windows Vista laptop. Now I really could not use my Ipod. I knew I needed to get down with the ZUNE and fast. I have no problem with that, as I have always been more of an MS guy anyway.

So I get the ZUNE from Best Buy, grab a six-pack of Bud Light, a little bourbon and I am ready to play. I am not the most technological, but the ZUNE was very easy to set up. They really make it very easy for anyone. It works perfectly with the Vista, which I was very happy about.

So now two days later I am in love with my ZUNE. I gave my Ipod to my wife, which she was very happy about. I have already spent over $100 in downloads. I bought downloads from 50 Cent, DJ Khaled, Fall Out Boy, Matchbox 20, Cassidy, and much more!

When I was growing up I was a huge music consumer. I am back to where I was at 12 years old. I love that I can just buy the songs that I like and ignore the ones that I don’t. The fact that I also work at Skope will make sure that I am exposed to all sorts of new music.

I wonder if I will ever buy a CD again? As of now I doubt it but one thing for sure I will continue to buy from ZUNE’s marketplace. I cannot wait to go home & do some more downloads. The music industry is healthy in the Friedman household!

Tristan Prettyman & Bonneville Environmental Foundation
Posted On 02/15/2008 10:41:10
Singer-songwriter and guitarist Tristan Prettyman and Virgin Records have donated "War Outta Peace," a track from Tristan's upcoming album Hello, to the non-profit Bonneville Environmental Foundation [BEF], which has used it in a DVD demonstrating the benefits of renewable energy to the organization's partners and supporters.

Virgin Records connected Prettyman with the BEF, which sells carbon-offsetting renewable energy certificates, called Green Tags, to replace traditional polluting sources of electricity with clean, secure, and renewable sources of energy that come from solar and wind power from across North America.

For donating "War Outta Peace," Prettyman will receive 30 Solar Green Tags from the BEF. Each Solar Green Tag represents one megawatt-hour of photovoltaic solar electricity and offsets approximately 1,295 pounds of CO2 emissions that would otherwise have been produced from electricity created from burning fossil fuels.

Prettyman's contribution to the BEF was a no-brainer for the eco-minded artist, who supported enough solar energy certificates from the organization to offset energy consumed in the recording of Hello - the San Diego, Calif., native's second album, which will be released by Virgin Records on April 15. The certificates for Hello offset approximately 38,000 pounds of CO2 emissions, the reduction equivalent of planting fives acres of trees or taking four cars off the road for one year.

"I was happy to donate my song to the Bonneville Environmental Foundation," Prettyman says. "It's just another way I can do my part for the environment." Prettyman drives a Toyota Highlander Hybrid, is an avid recycler, and purchases biodegradable cleaning products for her home. "I also have a little composting pile in my backyard, use canvas bags at the grocery store, and try to buy as many organic and fair-trade-certified items as possible."

"Madly," the first single from Hello, went to radio last month and Prettyman has confirmed spring tours for February 14 to March 7 (supporting G. Love & Special Sauce) and a headline run from March 19 to April 27.  She will also appear on Last Call with Carson Daly on March 18.

Stoli Razz Goes To The Ballet To See Romeo & Juliet
Posted On 02/15/2008 08:49:44

By: Stoli Razz

Last night (2/14) as we all know was the coveted night of love. Love was in the air in Boston that is for sure. I was invited by my friends at Goodman Media to take my Valentine to see the opening night of Romeo & Juliet at the Wang Theater in Boston, MA. This performance was being done by the world famous, Boston Ballet.

Now I know what many of you are thinking, why is Skope sending someone to see a ballet? Well you see at Skope, we go by the motto, “For The Love of Music.” One thing this ballet had was amazing music.

We started out our night at California Pizza Kitchen in the theatre district. I am a sucker for their pizza and appetizers. I actually used to wait tables there while in college. The theatre is right across the street from the Wang so it was perfect.

We arrived at 6:45 pm and immediately were greeted by a very polite woman who had our tickets waiting. We then headed right to the bar for some wine to help get us in the mood. You cannot bring alcohol into the theater so you have to maximize your drinks before heading to your seat. No problem for The Razz!

The show began right on time at 7:15 pm. For those that have never been, the Wang Theater is gorgeous in every way. We had perfect seats right in the middle and the place was packed. I had a feeling it would be sold out.

There is no reason for me to recite the classic story of Romeo & Juliet. Everyone knows how the story begins and sadly ends. But what I can talk about is the details that went into the show. The scenery first of all was authentic. It really looked like the performers were in Verona, Italy. You could imagine that the scene was taking place in Italy in the 1400’s.

The performers were brilliant. The dancing and singing were so well in sync with the music it went without a glitch. This show had a nice amount of sword fighting which was cool. It was rather action packed for a ballet. The ladies were very attractive and they played their roles perfectly. There was no dialogue, which was nice as it lets the audience improvise what is going on. The music tells the story of what is happening.

The show ran until about 9:30 with two intermissions. It did not seem too long though as there was a lot of action. After the show was over, I felt very cultured. It was a new experience for me and I cannot wait to do it again. If you are in Boston or coming to our fine city go take that special someone and see Romeo & Juliet, it’s well worth it!

The Other Side Of Success
Posted On 02/12/2008 13:14:48

By: Michael Friedman

When I started Skope in 2000, I was a naive and optimistic college student. It was an interesting time as I was studying music industry at Northeatsern University in Boston. I was concerned that when I graduated I would have no music industry contacts for a job in the biz after graduation.

Now here we are in 2008. I am 28 years old and am married. I am so very happy with everything in my life. I love my wife and I know that nomatter what we will have a very nice life together. Alot of people do not knopw this but I also work 40 hours a week at Children's Hospital in Boston. I really like my job here and it allows me to do Skope & manage Access Control - Security as well. I used to be ashamed of that within the music industry but now I embrace it as something that not everyone could do. Its nice to have work that I enjoy and a passion project as well.

I am also very proud of Skope. My grandfather & I have invested  over $400K into this company. We built it up from scratch to what you see on the newsstands and online today. We really started Skope with no knowledge of anything except that I love music and I love being involved with the music biz.

As of now we have various revenue streams and increasing revenues. I have learned that you can have the best magazine, staff, & website but without those big marketing numbers, you just cannot compete. Every issue and every month we grow alittle bit and that keeps me going. As long as Skope stays on an upward direction there is reason to continue on.

I truly believe in Skope I just feel that in this day and age it takes time to catch on. Skope is so diverse and so real that people do not get it at first. My grandfather always tells me that Skope will be a $10 million company. I listen and believe he is right.

Going through this chapter of my life has taught me so much. I have so much repect for those that have taken a risk. People of all forms take risks from musicians to businessmen. Without risk there is no reward. People who have put it all on the line and have made it work.

When I look back on why I started Skope it was never to get rich. I am the type of person who does not need much anyway. I started Skope to make a mark in the music business and to provide talented people solid jobs.

My idols coming up were and still are David Geffen, Clive Davis, Steve Rifkind, Lyor Cohen, Marc Ecko, & Dave Mays. If I can even be placed in the same regard as one of them, I will be happy.

I still am not sure what the purpose of this was, but in this day of the BLOG, I figured why not?!

The Story of Skope: By Michael Friedman
Posted On 02/12/2008 12:26:15

By: Michael Friedman
CEO/Publisher

Skope Magazine was concocted in the spring of 2000 in a classroom at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. Michael Friedman, a music industry major, wanted to create a media company that focused on musicians that were very talented but being ignored by the mainstream media. For the class project Michael drew up a business plan that would start his media company as a magazine and branch off from there.

Michael’s father Neil Friedman took a trip up to Boston to enjoy a beautiful Saturday. While at Joe’s on Newbury Street, Michael told Neil all about his plans. He explained that if executed properly this company could fill a major niche for a lot of frustrated music enthusiasts on a global scale. Neil was very interested and decided to chat with Michael’s grandfather Irwin Friedman about it. My grandfather who had faith & trust in me decided to become my partner in making this venture, a successful journey into the publishing & music world.

At the time, Michael was working as a bartender at California Pizza Kitchen in Boston. He had engaged some of the other servers to come in with him and help develop the company. After weeks of spreading the word and attracting help Michael came up with the name. The media company was to be called Skope Entertainment Inc. The first step was to create Skope Magazine.

In January of 2001, Skope Magazine was born. It was black & white, 20 pages, and filled with musicians, emcees, and bands from Boston. Michael took 1,000 copies and gave them out for free throughout Northeastern and at live music venues in Boston. Ozzie’s Pizza in Brighton, MA was the first advertiser to believe & advertise in Skope Magazine.

Word began to spread and college students from all over the city wanted to get involved. Skope was a great opportunity for students to get real world experience & gain college credits. Within 2 issues, Skope was attracting major & indie label talent from all over the US to be featured in the magazine. Michael would produce a new issue on a Bi-Monthly basis. When he was not in class or waiting tables he was selling ADS, soliciting features, and producing Skope Magazine.

In April of 2001, the second phase of Skope Entertainment Inc was launched. Skopemagazine.com had come to the Internet. The website was designed to be a supplement to the magazine. It gave readers all over the world an opportunity to check out Skope online. Michael posted news, features, giveaways, and anything that he knew his readers would be interested in.

In November of 2002 Michael decided that it was time to celebrate all that Skope had accomplished. It was decided that the next phase of Skope was ready to be launched. This phase came to be known as Skope Live! Skope Live! is the live music concert promoter division of SEI. Since the first show in which Jon Brown’s Body sold out Harper’s Ferry in Allston, MA, Skope Live! has put on shows throughout the northeast at such venues as Bill’s Bar, The Middle East, The Cutting Room, FELT, and The All Asia.

In March of 2004 Michael had grown weary of the black & white version of Skope Magazine. He always saw Skope as an international venture that enthusiasts could enjoy from Amsterdam to Miami. He decided it was time to add pages, gloss, & lots of color. In April of 2004 the first full color edition came out. This new upgrade made Michael realize that this magazine was good enough for retail and should no longer be given out for free. Within weeks, meetings were set up with Newbury Comics and Tower Records in New England. Both chains agreed to sell the magazine at $1 to start. Skope began attracting top cover stories as The Donnas, Young Buck, D-12, Thrice, Fall Out Boy, The Dresden Dolls, just to name a few. Sales at retail were strong and subscriptions began to come in from across the US. Skope had now gone from a free local publication to a regional magazine with a domestic subscriber base.

By January of 2006 Skope Magazine had grown to over 60 pages and was selling quite well at Newbury Comics & Tower. In May of 2006, Michael was offered a contract through Ingram Periodicals for national distribution in all bookstores that Ingram services. These bookstores included Barnes & Noble, Hastings, Borders, and many more. Michael was thrilled, as he knew Skope would now get the chance to compete on a national level. The hot cover stories kept coming with My Chemical Romance, Ludacris, Linkin Park, Taking Back Sunday and much more!

In May of 2007, CTC Magazines in Canada contacted Skope to see about taking on distribution of Skope on the newsstands beyond just bookstores. This was going to make Skope available in even more outlets, which was crucial considering Skope’s demand. Michael brought on a whole new staff to help take Skope to the next level. He knew that if Skope was going to compete he was going to need help in all areas of this blossoming media conglomerate.

Today, almost 6.5 years after the first Skope Magazine was published, Skope has become an impressive company. The magazine is sold in retail on an international level for $3.99 US. The magazine is now 108 pages, full color & gloss. A new staff was brought on board to raise the level of excellence & readership and take it to the next level. Skopemagazine.com is clocking over 500K hits per month. The website now has features, Podcasts, radio, ADS, news, giveaways, blogs, columns, tour dates, forums, & much more. Skope Live! is still putting on some of the most fun live music shows. They have also teamed up with Autism Speaks to help raise money for a great cause while people party the night away.

The story of Skope Entertainment Inc continues to this day so get on board and join the fun!
